Filaxto

A Filaxto is an Orthodox amulet rectangular pendant  made in Monasteries with a cross, Jesus Christ and/or the Most-Holy Theotokos. They are used to keep away evil from the person who pins them to their clothes, in bed, in the car or kept in your wallet/bag. They are a reminder of our Orthodox faith.

According to Orthodox tradition each filaxto is typically filled with matter from objects blessed for altar use (cotton soaked in Holy Anointing Oil, shavings of wax from candles burned upon a church's altar, rags from a priests vestments), parts of plants used in ceremonies (olive leaves, flowers from the Holy Friday Kouvouklion - Epitaphios, blessed palms), soil from a Saint's grave and/or include flowers from Epitaphios and cotton with Oil and Myrh from the Church.

Saint George commemorated on the 23rd April (movable feast date)

Saint George commemorated on the 23rd of April, however if this feast date falls during Holy Week the feast will be moved to after Easter. He is the patron saint of the military, including soldiers, knights, cavalry, and scouts, as well as archers and farmers. He is also a protector against leprosy, plague, and venomous snakes.

Saints Raphael, Irene & Nicholas of Lesbos commemorated on Bright Tuesday (movable feast date)

Saints Raphael, Irene and Nicholas are the Martyrs of Lesbos, who were killed by the Turks on Bright Tuesday on April 9, 1463. Each year they are commemorated on Bright Tuesday, the first Tuesday after Orthodox Easter. They are known as miracle-workers and divine protectors who intercede with the Lord for healing, consolation, and protection. 

* Saint Raphael name means "God heals" or "Divine Healer," reflecting his primary role as an agent of God's healing power. He is the patron saint of travellers, the blind, doctors, nurses, medical caregivers, people suffering from bodily illnesses and nightmares, and people seeking healing. 

* Saint Irene the Great Martyr is the patron saint of married couples, people struggling with infertility, and those seeking healing, inner peace and divine protection.

* Saint Nicholas of Lesbos is the patron saint for the people of Lesbos and the wider church.  

Saint Paisios of Mount Athos and Protector of Australia commemorated on the 12th July

Saint Paisios the Athonite, is the patron saint of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia and the protector of Australia , youth, signalmen, and the Military communications corps.  

Saint Dimitrios of Thessaloniki commemorated on the 26th October

Saint Dimitrios is the patron saint of Thessaloniki, Greece. He is also the protector of soldiers and farmers, and protector of Thessaloniki from invaders. 

Saint Nektarios of Aegina commemorated on the 9th November

Saint Nektarios is the Patron Saint for people suffering from cancer, heart problems, arthritis, epilepsy, and other diseases. He is also known for his prolific writings, philosophical works, and miracles.

Saint Andrew the First-Called commemorated on the 30th November

Saint Andrew is the patron saint of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He is also the patron of Greece, Cyprus and the city of Patras, as well as being the patron saint of fishermen, fishmongers, and singers, and offering protection against sore throats and convulsions. He is known as the First-Called (Prōtoklētos) because he was the first apostle to follow Jesus.
